Market Survey: Aqua Republica – a serious game

Making educational learning about water a reality

In cooperation with UNEP and Serious Games Interactive, DHI has created a concept to increase education about river basin planning through Aqua Republica (www.AquaRepublica.com), a serious game. The goal is to raise awareness and educate stakeholders about the importance and challenges of managing limited natural resources in the face of multiple and often competing demands in the drive towards sustainable development and climate change adaptation.

Today, the connection between social and economic developments and environmental sustainability are critical - with water being an essential building block. Unfortunately, these linkages are not yet widely recognised.

Aqua Republica

The aim of this game is to help solve this problem by creating a realistic simplification of the real world, where players can practice decision making in an interactive learning environment, with real time simulation of hydrological processes, developments, and water resources management options.

Your help is required
As we are in the process of developing this game, which is built using a MIKE BASIN model, we would like to gather information on whether such a tool would be useful in providing a continuous and flexible e-learning platform as well as a collaboration tool for stakeholder meetings. We recognise that your time is limited but your opinions are highly valuable to us as your input will help shape the ultimate appearance and usability of the game.

Participate in a brief survey
Therefore, we would like to invite you to participate in a brief survey. The survey will not take longer than 15 minutes and can be filled out at your convenience.

Click here to participate in the survey.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Chengzi Chew.

Thank you for helping us with our research. Your response is important to us!

Previews of MIKE by DHI Release

As mentioned in the previous issues of our newsletter, we would like to disclose some previews of the upcoming MIKE by DHI software package 2012, which is scheduled to be released this September. The release will contain various new and exciting features, which we hope will improve your experience when using the software products, both with regard to usability, productivity, and enhanced applications.

MIKE 21 2012: New wave spectra converter

With the primary goal to improve and ease the generation of boundary conditions for MIKE 21 SW, the upcoming 2012 version will include a new Wave Spectra Converter tool in the wave toolbox.

Boundary conditions for MIKE 21 SW are often based on integral wave parameters (significant wave height, peak wave period, mean wave direction, etc.) available from public sources. Actually, full wave spectral information is often available but it has been complicated to generate the required data for a MIKE 21 SW boundary. This new tool will solve this problem by making it possible to manipulate full wave spectra, including the generation of fully spectral boundary data for MIKE 21 SW.

Please click on the illustrations to view larger versions.

FEFLOW 6.1: Visualising the groundwater surface

With the upcoming release 2012, modelling groundwater with FEFLOW is scheduled to take an important step forward by improving the usability, comprehensibility and speeding up the workflow process.

Visualising the groundwater surface improves the understanding of groundwater models dramatically. Using the pressure, this visualisation can be achieved by restricting the parameters’ range to zero. This is already possible with FEFLOW 6.0, but requires some effort in order to adjust the view settings. With the new FEFLOW 6.1, zero pressure isosurfaces are added for the 3D and zero pressure isolines for the 2D views. Both become directly available when plotting the pressure in the view components and thus speeding up the visualisation process.

MIKE URBAN 2012: Catchment delineation from digital elevation models

Catchment delineation is one of the essential steps for surface-runoff modelling. With MIKE URBAN version 2012 catchments, as a basic physical entity of the landscape, can be derived easily from digital elevation models (DEM). The number of available DEMs as well as the spatial resolution has been increased rapidly over the last years. Using this delineation technique will improve accuracy of the catchment delineation compared to a pure geometrical method (e.g. Thiessen polygons). The technique involved is well known as it is already utilised in MIKE BASIN.

First MIKE by DHI user group meetings of the year held in Vietnam!

The very first user group meetings of 2012 were held with great success in Hanoi in Vietnam on March 8, closely followed by Ho Chi Minh City on March 13.

Approximately 30 and 40 hopeful, enthusiastic, and well prepared participants were gathered for these 3rd annual meetings in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh respectively. During the meetings the participants gained and shared knowledge about various aspects of their work within the world of water, and the meetings provided a good opportunity for the participants to discuss and share essential elements of their daily work across business areas.

The two user group meetings consisted of a mixture of items prepared by the users as well as by representatives from DHI. In order to learn about various possible uses, opportunities, and challenges of MIKE by DHI software, selected users presented real-world case studies including topics such as storm surges, multi-reservoir operations, flood projects, hydraulic calculations, and irrigation planning. Furthermore, the participant, learned about new software features and technologies presented by Torben S. Jensen, and Henrik Bundgaard from DHI, which provided insight into the continuous developments and possibilities of MIKE by DHI software.

“There were some interesting user presentations, which raised some good and instructive discussions among the participants. The participants responded very well to the Software News presentations and especially appreciated our focus on modelling speed for the new 2012 release,” says Henrik Bundgaard from DHI.

The user group meetings in Vietnam kicked off a highly interesting year with many MIKE by DHI user group meetings scheduled across the globe.

For more information about the user group meetings in Vietnam, please contact Tran Hanh, DHI Vietnam, Torben S. Jensen or Henrik Bundgaard.

WEST goes to South Africa

An extensive road show was recently carried out in South Africa, organised by the DHI South African branch office in collaboration with Desktop Scientific, which is the sole distributor of WEST in the area. The road show provided a mixture of seminars, training courses, and one-to-one meetings.

An integrated part of the road-show, were half-day seminars, which were offered at University of Cape Town, Umgeni Water in Durban, and Wits University in Johannesburg. The seminars attracted about 60 participants, from academia, industries, and governments, and were aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of WEST 2011 as well as demonstrating the main features, such as setting up a simple plant layout with automated controllers, executing dynamic simulations, evaluating objectives, etc.

Furthermore, a three-day (basic as well as advanced) training course was held at University of Cape Town where participants included representatives from the WEST Development Centres of Universities of Cape Town and kwaZulu-Natal, as well as engineering companies.

During the road show, DHI discussed technical matters related to future model development in WEST with the Pollution Research Group of the University of kwaZulu-Natal. The main objective is to incorporate the plant-wide model and the chemical speciation model (for pH calculation) into WEST, which is something that DHI is gradually working on.

Learn more about WEST and the possibilities to join a training course in your area on our website.

For more information about the road show in South Africa, please contact Andrew Pott from DHI in South Africa or Jason Garber from Desktop Scientific.
